Smells can trigger strong emotions like pleasure and disgust, and even bring back long-forgotten memories. However for many animals, odours are a key way of communicating. Certain chemicals – "pheromones" – can control behaviour, particularly when it comes to mating and reproduction. Dr Will Swaney of Liverpool John Moores University will delve into the biology of this smelly world, exploring how pheromones regulate animal attraction and the role they may (or may not) play in human relations.
