Find out how to prepare for a sales apprenticeship
Iryna shares what it's like to complete a Sales Coordinator apprenticeship with this Q&A...
In 2015, Iryna undertook a Sales Coordinator apprenticeship with The Challenge. Since then, she’s received two promotions and now works as an Assistant Account Manager at the same charity. Read on to find out why she decided to do an apprenticeship and what advice she has for those looking to apply...
Why did you decide to do an Apprenticeship?
I wasn’t quite sure if university was for me or what I wanted to do at university, so I chose to do an apprenticeship as I figured it would give me time to decide. I also knew it’d be a great way to develop skills for my CV.
What skills was the employer looking for during the application process?
The employer was mainly looking for: professionalism, good written communication, the ability to understand customer needs and confidence in public speaking.
How did experiences at school or extracurricular activities boost your application?
Because the apprenticeship role I was going for involved working with young people, my experience from volunteering with younger year groups during sports clubs / PE lessons showed that I already had relevant experience. Also, my experience as Head Girl at school meant that I had a lot of experience in public speaking, which was also a big part of the role.
What skills or competencies would you recommend students (11-18) to develop for the working world, and how should they go about developing them?
Many employers require applicants to have strong written communication, good teamwork skills, adaptability, problem solving skills and, sometimes, good public speaking skills. I think the best way to develop these skills is by getting involved with the school council or prefect team, volunteering at after-school clubs, and volunteering at charity shops or other organisations in the local area.
Has the Apprenticeship helped you progress into a career or job?
Yes, I am still at the same company (going on 3 years) and I am currently working as an Assistant Account Manager. I’m hoping to move onto similar jobs in the future.
